I just visited Doug's gallery of beautiful pieces. He was truly gifted in his work. I will always remember him from Kona Village. Whenever I wear my village logo necklace and earrings I remember him and the 2 lovely ladies who worked with him...very, very fond memories. My prayers are with him and his family.

As regulars to Kona Village, we always spent time with Doug and his girls at his shop and had him make pins for Eleanor and later our daughters-in-law and granddaughter. Sickness caused us to miss our trips in 2010 and 2011, so we were shocked to learn of his early passing in Oct 2009. When this week we tried to reach him via email only learn it was no longer active, I found his website and was shocked to learn of his passing. You lost a great man and we lost a great friend. We will always remember him as a big part of Kona Village.

We are both so saddened by your profound loss. Not only a man of great artistic talents but such a kind, gentle soul. My husband purchased a most beautiful tahitian pearl pendant of Douglas' gifted hand, for me on our first visit to the big Island. We both love his craftsmanship and attention to detail. Since that first purchase, he also ordered a few custom pieces to commemorate special occasions, and so enjoyed Douglas' graciousness in including him in the design process. We both send you our prayers for peace and comfort. So happy to know he was a man of great faith, and certain of his eternal home.

I was so very sad and shocked to hear of Doug's sudden and untimely death. I always enjoyed visiting him and Tracey when I was at Kona Village.  I have bought several exquisite pieces of jewelry from Doug over the years, and will cherish them that much more now that he is gone.  Doug was truly a gifted artist and craftsman. I always receive admiring comments when I wear his jewelry, but one zircon ring in particular attracts a lot of attention, especially from other jewelers: ?May I look at that ring??--(gazing intently)--?THAT is a VERY beautiful and VERY well-made ring!  My heartfelt sympathy and prayers are with his family, friends and coworkers. The last time I saw Doug, he was working on a necklace for his wife, and as he talked you could tell how deeply he loved his family. I am not surprised to read in Doug's History that he was a man of faith, as this was evident in his gentle, kind and caring nature. I pray that God will give Elizabeth and Noah strength, encouragement and His peace that surpasses all understanding.
Love, Margaret Feige

We are heartbroken to hear this! We were staying at Kona Village about 5 years ago, and wandered into the store there. We really loved his work, and I never wear jewelry. I told Doug, it was important to me to buy jewelry from someone like him (an artist) since my step brother, who was also an artist/jeweler had just died. We ended up buying two pendants and a chain. Those are the only two things I have ever worn since we brought them home. I was thinking recently how nice it would be to add another piece from Doug when we returned to Hawaii. We are sorry for is family and will cherish our meeting with him and his beautiful work that much more.

I was so sorry to hear about Doug's passing. He designed wedding bands for my wife Sylvia and I eleven years ago so in a way he had a part in us beginning our lives together. I remember hearing that he was also a pastor, so I asked him what the name of his church was and I will never forget his response. He said: "Well the church meets in my house so I guess it's The Church of the Living Room." Well he's moved from the living room to the Throne Room, and we will see him again! God bless you.

Aloha,I received the charm today.  It is special like everything he made.   I have a lot of Doug's jewelry.  In fact, he made the ring I wear every day that my husband and I purchased from him six years ago on our 20th wedding anniversary.  The Humuhumu is on a chain with Doug's beautiful honu.  I wear it all the time.  I always feel that his jewelry is so beautiful because it expresses not only his artistry and craftsmanship but his spirit.  We met Doug over 20 years ago, I think, before he took over the jewelry store when I seem to recall that he was in business in that location with two partners.  He always enjoyed our visits with him at Kona Village.  His sudden passing shocked us and reminded us how fragile our lives are and how little is really within our control.  Doug was especially kind to our son, now 19, who was very interested in gems.

Aloha, I received the card about Doug’s untimely death in the mail on MondayTo say I was stunned was not even close. I met Doug when he was at 404 Piikoi in Honolulu in the early 80's when I first went to him to repair an emerald ring. I was told by a friend that he was "the emerald guy" here in Hawaii and to have only him work on the repair. We struck up a friendship and my husband and I used to stop by his house on Diamond Head in between jobs and Doug would show us his latest custom projects and teach us about gemstones and goldsmith-ing. When he was the manager of Rainbow Collection we loved to stop in and continue our "education" and visit. Needless to say over the years whenever there was a birthday, anniversary, or Christmas my first wish for a gift was something made by Doug. My husband is an artist and Doug created our designs and his for us that mean so much. I will miss his ready smile, twinkle in his eye, soft chuckle and gentle presence in our lives. I wear his jewerly every day and have thought about him daily for years and years and told countless people who comment on his designs who he is, and where to find him. I send my deepest aloha to Elizabeth and Noah

I was shocked and saddened to receive the news about Doug.  I have many wonderful pieces of his (beautiful rings, pendants, and pearls), and they will always be very special to me because of his craftsmanship and my fond memories of purchasing them at the Kona Village shop.  My additional purchase through the website is a tribute to Doug, and I hope it will be of some small help to his family.  Please pass on my best wishes to Tracey Jensen, who was always so helpful and fun to talk with at the shop.  Perhaps she remembers me and my daughter from our visits. Although it has been nearly a year since Doug's passing, I'm sure everyone is still missing his presence very much.  I wish you all peace and healing from the loss.  Please know I will always treasure the beauty that Doug's life brought into my own,
Adrienne

Doug was a special friend to my wife and I. We had met in Honolulu in 1987 and shared some great meals and beach times together. We enjoyed seeing his career grow over the years. Doug made our wedding rings and other pieces over the years. He was a gifted artist! We were so shocked to hear of Doug's passing. It seemed so wrong and untimely. Our hearts and prayers go out to Elizabeth and Noah!

I just received the postcard letting us all know of Doug's passing. I am so sorry and deeply saddened!. When my family and I were staying at Kona Village 6 years ago, we visited Doug store. There was a tiny plumeria charm on display. The same plumeria that is on the home page! I asked if it could be made into a necklace - having the plumeria remain stationary. Of course was Doug's reply. We said goodbye to Kona and about a week later my necklace arrived. I WEAR IT ALL THE TIME! I never take it off. I get compliments on it all the time.  It is my favorite piece of jewelry. I treasure it always and now... it means that much more!  I will say hello to you in my meditations Doug!
Much love,

There's rarely a day that goes by when our minds and thoughts don't drift to KVR, the shop, and pleasant "talk story" with Doug. What a nice... and talented... man he was! We're fortunate to have known him, and are blessed to possess many treasures he created for us over many, many years. Thanks for the memories, Doug, and for the friendship.

Just received your postcard and with sorrow learned of Doug's passing. My husband, Don, and I visited the Kona Village in November for many years. Of course we always enjoyed stopping in to visit Doug and Tracey. Don loved to chat and joke while I looked at all the beautiful jewelry and "hinted" for my next Christmas gift. Doug was very low key, but charming and funny. He seemed very content with life.

We did not know about Doug's death until your card arrived. How sad we are to hear this but happy to know he had such great faith and a wonderful family. We knew Doug at Kona Village and treasure a story bracelet he crafted for Day Day. It beautifully expressed our love of Kona Village's beautiful bay and the whales, dolphins and rays we have swum with. We have been staying a Kona Village since the early 70s and have enjoyed seeing Doug on our visits. We were always amazed at how he remembered our names and appreciated how warmly he welcomed us. I had no idea he was born and raised in Nebraska, where I spent much of my life. Also, Day Day and I share a love of the Western Pacific and Asia. I would have loved to hear his stories. He was truly a gifted craftsman, adventurer and obviously a loving family man.

Posted September 27, 2010 from Washington When my husband renewed our vows at Kona Village in 2005 , 3 important pieces came from Doug. My wedding bracelet (the white gold story bracelet in the custom gallery). Ukelele earrings for Lani, who married us. And my new wedding ring. I am so grateful to have these pieces to remember that special day. And now, after this sad news , there is added meaning.
I am so sorry.

I had the great good fortune to work with Doug for several months in his jewelry workshop. He was a wonderful teacher, very calm. Doug was a very open hearted person and generous with sharing his knowlege and expertise. He was a true Renaissance man, able to create masterpieces in any medium he chose. I cherish my memories of spending time with him, learning, laughing, and being amazed by his incredible talent!

Douglas Glenn was an artist, a creator. He had vision, taking things unformed and rough, with seemingly little value to those without the eyes to see the beauty within, then transforming them into treasures that would last forever. What a reflection of how our God takes our broken lives and makes them beautiful. What an honor in life, to have reflected that creative aspect of God, to have taken the unformed and given it astonishing beauty. I will miss walking past the little store on Mamane Street and not seeing Doug, quietly and intently, diligently working, totally absorbed and focused on his current project.

Doug was not only an amazing artist but a wonderful person to work with. He had a fun sense of humor and loved to tell a good story. I was so impressed with the custom work he did. People would try to describe what they wanted and when they got the jewelry, they were always so impressed about how beautiful it had turned out-so much more than what they had in mind. I know I treasure the pieces of jewelry that Doug made for me; and I think about all the beautiful jewelry that I got to be a part of sending off to their new owners. I treasure my time at Kona Village!

I really miss being in the store with Doug, Tracey and Sarah. I got to wear all sort of different outfits and I know I always cheered them up when they would open the store. I was often at the computer or doing Doug’s job at his work bench. I don’t know what they would have done without me. Now that I have been put out to pasture (not really-I sit in a recliner at Tracey’s house making sure her dogs don’t think I am a toy!), I think fondly of all the fun I had with Kona Village guest as well as Doug, Sarah and Tracey

My husband and I stayed at Doug and Elizabeth's ohana when we first moved to Hawaii in 2004. I began working for Doug two weeks later and was immediately impressed with his artistry and craftsmanship, but more importantly, his integrity in business. He was always honest and fair with his customers and their loyalty bore witness to this. Doug and Elizabeth became our best friends on the island, we spent a lot of time at their home with many deep and theological conversations crossing the table over a great meal; their genuine hospitality was a pleasure.  One thing I enjoyed about Doug was his humor - which was quick and continual (he always laughed at my jokes--and his own, too)!  He will always have a place in our hearts and we are grateful to have had such a good friend.
